Holywood had a brilliant day out at the annual Holywood Cricket Tournament at Seapark this afternoon hosted by Holywood Cricket Club. Holywood entered 2 teams into the tournament with a total of 18 boys representing the school in the cricket squad. The teams competed in 2 groups against teams from Sullivan Prep, Campbell, Gilnahirk and The Barbarians (a team put together using players from other schools).

The boys did themselves and their school proud with their attitude and sportsmanship throughout the course of the tournament! There was a high standard of cricket being played and the matches were closely contested, competitive and played in a good spirit.

SQUAD: Zach, Jamie. George, Charlie, Thomas, Jude, Patrick, Daniel, Jackson, Darby, Finn, William, Noah, Luke, Adam, Will, Millar and Jacob.

North Down Football Tournament

Holywood Footballers had a great day on Friday competing alongside 16 other schools in the North Down Primary Schools Cup.

Holywood were in Group C alongside Ballyholme, Ballymagee, Bloomfield and Portavogie. Holywood showed great team work throughout the group stages and displayed some moments of magic and great passages of play. They came out on top in their opening game against Ballyholme with a 2-1 victory thanks to two super strikes from both Jamie and Logan but narrowly lost in their remaining games after some hard fought contests.

Holywood remained positive from their performances going into the Quarter Final of the plate where they faced Kilmaine B. After going behind early in the game Holywood fought back to level the match and take the game to a penalty shoot out. After a super save from Patrick in nets - Zac, Isaac and Jamie cooly dispatched each of their kicks in style to see Holywood through to the Semi Finals where they would meet Andrews Memorial.

Unfortunately after a great game and performance from both teams, Andrews Memorial slightly edged past a resolute Holywood team to progress to the Final.

Holywood footballers had an amazing day out showcasing their footballing ability, teamwork and sportsmanship in what was a fantastic day of football fun for all involved. Each player shone and should be very proud of their attitude and application throughout the course of the tournament both on and off the pitch.

TEAM: Patrick, Cally, Zac, Cyrus, Curtis, Luke, Hayden, Isaac, Logan and Jamie

NI Water provide free water bottles to every pupil in HPS!

Our Eco committee followed up their meeting with NI water in April by completing a survey from P1-7 to see how many pupils regularly use reuseable water bottles. They were really encouraged to find over 83%  of HPS pupils use reusable water bottles. This is really encouraging but our aim is to get it over 95%. NI water have provided a free reuseable water bottle for every pupil in the school. These are BPA free. The boys and girls were very excited to receive them and it’s been great to see them getting lots of use in the last week or so! Let’s work together to cut down single use plastics!

Holywood P.S Rugby Club – Kingspan Festival

The School Rugby Club travelled to the Kingspan Stadium to compete in a mini rugby tournament.  The squad was a mix of mainly P7 boys with a handful of P6 boys stepping up to the challenge. With glorious weather, it only heightened the boy’s excitement to get started. We were in a group with three other primary schools; Greenisland P.S, Gibson P.S and Bushvalley P.S.

Our first opponent was Greenisland P.S. They were a quick side with plenty to offer. We played well in attack but the game was won with the excellent team effort in defence. Strong tackles and excellent rucking help HPS gain possession. Darby and Dylan both managed to power over the line with George scoring a brace.

Game 1 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Greenisland P.S 1

Our second match was against Bushvalley P.S, this game was all about our attack. The dry weather helped as the boys offloaded whenever possible and passed the ball effectively around the pitch.  The boys showed no sign of slowing down and managed to score 4 fantastic tries.  Well done to George, Charlie, Luke and Noah for crossing the line and scoring.

Game 2 – Full Time Holywood P.S 4 – Bushvalley P.S 1

Our final game was against Gibson P.S, they were also unbeaten and a very physical side. As soon as the whistle went the rain started to pour down, this led to more scrums and less fluidity. We defended heroically against a much bigger side but Gibson P.S managed to score once in the first half.  In the second half, we had more possession but the slippery ball made attacking much more challenging.  The boys all played excellently and it was not without effort that we unfortunately didn’t manage to score in this game.

Game 3 – Full Time Holywood P.S 0 – Gibson P.S 1

Many thanks again to all the parents who offered to help with lifts and who came to support and to Ulster Rugby for organising a fantastic event.

HPS Squad - William, Luke, Darby, Daniel, George, Noah, Dylan, Charlie, Ronan, Mathew, James, Jacob, Will, Ben & Zach

The Daily Mile 10th Birthday Celebration

Today the whole of Holywood Primary School celebrated the 10th Birthday of The Daily Mile. We took to the playground with thousands of schools around the world to complete The Daily Mile together, all on the same day! Each class or year group spent 15 minutes out of the classroom in the fresh air with their friends to have a break and get active. They walked, jogged or ran at their own pace and had lots of fun! The Daily Mile is a great inititaive that not only helps children to get fitter and healthier but also has a huge impact on both their social and emotional health too.

We had lots of fun celebrating the positive benefits that daily activity has on our physical, mental and social health today! Why don’t you check out some photos of the pupils and staff hitting the tarmac to get those daily steps in! :)

The Lyric Comes to HPS!

On Monday performers from the Lyric Theatre in Belfast came to Holywood Primary school to perform for the P5 year group. They performed A Walk is Not Just A Walk by Jess Williams and Michael Beigel. The play follows five friends on an adventure through their local park exploring themes of littering, plastic pollution and global warming! It was a helpful reminder of how our actions can have global implications which is part of Global Perspectives Eco Topic.
