Dunville Garden Eco Schools Celebration

Members of our school Eco Committee attended a community celebration today at Dunville Gardens at Redburn. They were one of four local schools represented, they learned a little of the history of the Dunville Garden and had the opportunity to go on a bug hunt and build mini beast homes. Our pupils engaged enthusiastically and demonstrated great knowledge of insects and wildlife. A big thank you to Lauren from the Ulster Conservation Volunteers for organising the event and the Holywood Shared Town initiative for funding it. The garden is open on a Monday and Saturday to the pubic and is well worth a visit.

P6 & P7 Cake Break

The School Council run P6 and P7 'Cake Break' was a roaring success. Much cake was eaten and enjoyed and they raised a fantastic £190 for their chosen charities. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed the delicious sweet treats. Special mention goes to  Ella, Leah, Betty and Hollie who made beautiful bracelets and sold them on Friday too. Special mention also to Joshua, our budding documentary photographer, for his great photography skills! More fundraising activities will come in the second week of June!

P4 Trip to Lough Neagh Discovery Centre

The P4 year group loved their days at the Lough Neagh Discovery Centre this week. We have been learning about Lough Neagh as part of our Northern Ireland topic. We had great fun pond dipping and searching for mini beast in the woodlands area. These activities brought to life our current school Eco topics of biodiversity and marine life; it was fascinating to learn about the interdependence of local food chains and the importance of the Lough Neagh fly! The play park was also a great hit!

P7 having fun in Holywood

P7 have been so busy. They helped R3 with their ICT work, enjoyed cricket in the sunshine and have been designing fabulous posters. As a special treat they went into Holywood for a picnic and an ice lolly. It’s great fun to play in Jonny the Jig during the day when no-one else is around!

North Down Hockey Blitz

The school hockey teams had a great time at Regent House last week, taking part in the qualifiers for the Pearson/McCloy Cup competitions.

The boys played on Thursday and were in a tough group with Carrickmannon, Towerview and Dundonald. They played well; drawing two matches and losing a third. Unfortunately they did not progress out of the group but they did win their consolation game against Crawfordsburn with Caleb scoring the only goal of the match!

The girls played on Friday and were up against Towerview, Academy and Comber. They started well with a 2-0 victory over Towerview, with our hockey captain Selena scoring both goals. The second match was a tough game but unfortunately a strong Acadmey side had too much and the girls lost 2-0. The final group game was against Comber, with the girls rallying following their previous game to run out 4-1 winners - the goals coming from Selena (x2) and Eva (x2)!

The girls finished second in their group which got them through to the quarter finals were they played Rathmore. This was a very close game but unfortunately for Holywood, Rathmore scored with almost the last hit of the match.

Well done to all the pupils involved!

(A special mention to Betty who volunteered to play goalkeeper for the girls despite never playing in nets before!)

Concern Worldwide Book Sale

Pupils from all classes had a fantastic time looking through the books provided by Concern Worldwide. Thanks to our fabulous P7’s for reading to some of our younger children and suggesting book titles. It was wonderful to be able to welcome parents to buy books after school. There was such a buzz around the hall.

Lyric Theatre Waste Busters Play

Our P5s enjoyed a fantastic performance by the Lyric Theatre called ‘Waste Busters’ this morning. The play used music and drama to raise awareness of littering and plastic pollution. It has a powerful message and tied into our work as an Eco School. A big thank you to the team from the Lyric Theatre in Belfast.
