HPS’s own version of Giro d’Italia !

CHARITY EVENTS  Congratulations to all the children, staff and parents who participated in a Sponsored Cycle & Walk for the MacMillan Cancer Charity.  The children wore their specially designed bright pink t-shirts on top of their sports gear as they set off on their SPONSORED WALK & CYCLE.

We were really encouraged that members of the public come out to support us in the town centre.

Thanks to the PSNI  for supporting and accompanying us on our routes along the Coastal path and for getting us back to school safely where we were greeted with a guard of honour by our P1 - P4 children and staff!

A great morning was had by all and all for a great cause!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

Building work HPS under construction

PLEASE TAKE CARE AS CONSTRUCTION WORK IS TAKING PLACE AT HPS.

Over the next few weeks significant construction work is taking place. With the help of Pat and his workmen we are really pleased that a new lift will be installed to allow disabled access to our upper level which the staff and pupils have wanted for a long time.

The boys and girls are intrigued by the scaffolding and engineering that is happening each day. Our P2 boys and girls are really pleased too as 'Building Sites' is a P2 Activity Based Learning Topic. This means they don't have to rely on photographs and websites to see what workmen do, they can just look outside at HPS!

WE STILL NEED MORE PLASTIC BOTTLES AND PARENTS TO HELP WITH CUTTING THEM TOO.

RSPB visit P4

Our two Primary 4 classes enjoyed an interesting afternoon with a representative from RSPB. They learnt lots of interesting information and asked some really important questions too. They really enjoyed going outside into the school grounds to use binoculars to spot various birds. They boys are girls are really looking forward to continuing bird watching now that we have more bird feeders along the P1 & P2 playground as well as in the designated area in our Sensory and Wildlife garden.

Giro d’Italia launch at HPS!

On Monday we welcomed a number of visitors and photographers to school. We were asked to host a photo shoot to accompany a press release promoting the forthcoming Giro d’Italia cycling event as well as the Giro Schools Programme and schools competitions organised by DRD Travelwise, SportNI and Sustrans. Look out for photos in the local press in the coming days which include some of our children, MLAs Mr. Kennedy, Minister for Regional Development and Education Minister Mr. O’ Dowd. Click on the DENI website and DRD website to read more information Following the visit I received a number of emails from our visitors complimenting our children and members of staff.

What a great way to begin the new term.

New Sensory & Wildlife Garden underway

Thanks to our successful Challenge Fund grant application to NI Enviromental Link work is well underway converting a disused area beside the back gates of school. The ground is being developed to create a Sensory and Wildlife area for the children to use and observe birds, minibeasts and an area we hope where small creatures may make their habitat. Plans have also included disabled access to and from the area as well as enhancing the Garden areas at the front of the school and next to the school playgrounds. Please enjoy viewing the story so far below and look back soon for more pictures!

PTA BAG PACK Please help

The main fundraising event in Term 2 will be a bag packing day at Tesco Knocknagoney on Saturday 18th January 2014. Please come along to help pack bags! We believe if 10 parents & children volunteer from each Year Group and give at least an hour of their time on Saturday 18th, we are sure we could raise £1000 in just one day!

To help the PTA please volunteer by completing the form here and return it to your child's teacher this week. We are simply asking for an hour of your time (but you are welcome to stay longer if you wish!).

PTA Christmas Fair

What a wonderful afternoon of fun, food and festivities for all families and friends! There was a great range of stalls to browse and buy from! The PHOTOBOOTH was very popular with some very funny poses being captured! We do not have a final total as yet but we believe it to be over £1300. Thanks to Kelly Shimmin and her team who did a marvellous job of co-ordinating this event. We would also like to thank the many parents and 6th Form pupils from Priory College who helped to set up the Fair, sort and price gifts and also for helping to tidy up after the event.

P1- P3 Christmas Nativity

Proud friends and families of our P1, P2 and P3 children gathered in a packed Assembly Hall where they were treated to a delightful Christmas Play ‘A Midwife Crisis’. The children sang, danced, played instruments and acted so well and really did give all their appreciative audiences performances to remember for a very long time! Thank you to a number of P4- P7 children who provided a musical programme prior to the Nativity. We were delighted to welcome some younger boys and girls this year from Plas Merdyn, Holywood and Glendhu Nursery Schools. A picture of the Nativity even featured in the Belfast Telegraph!
